Teacher Talk Tuesday
Reading Comprehension at its Finest
Seeing as though it is summer, the teacher talk Tuesdays may be a bit less... structured.
One of the greatest feelings as a reader is becoming so wrapped up in a book you just can't put it down. Can you relate? It's amazing, you're a part of their world, whoever they may be, and definitely feel a sense of accomplishment as you turn the final page and conclude your journey. You find the meaning in everything you read because, you're just that talented! This my friends, is reading comprehension and it is one of the most rewarding higher level thinking skills out there. With this wonderful gift comes some unintended downfalls, no doubt. Allow me to explain.
Teaching is a fun profession because not only do I teach and model excellent comprehension skills, with an emphasis on model ahhahaha, I also live in a constant search for meaning kind of state. While this all sounds lovely, it has a weird way of biting me in the a** sometimes.
Case in point: Yesterday, I was driving on the highway and came upon the information board set over the lanes, you know... the DOT's way of relaying important travel information for us? or so I thought.
Yesterday the sign read:
Wing Ding 32
5th Street Exit Closed--- new screen--
use 7th Ave. Exit
?!?!heh?!?!--- my mind goes into immediate "search for meaning" mode
What? Does that say wing ding 32? What the heck does that mean? Are they people? Maybe there are 32 of them? Is this an elite thing.... does everyone know about Wind Dings except for me? Where are they going? ... to a secret meeting to eat chicken wings? Well jokes on them, isn't it, everyone in central Iowa knows about this now... how accessible are these message boards anyway, can just anyone place anything on them nowadays? What's next highway message board proposals? Maybe the Wing Dings are Dr. Seuss fans.... Wind Dings 32 and Cindy Lou Who Too... hahahah... I don't think all that'd fit on the board, plus it'd be totally ridiculous... oh wait... it already is... Maybe you have to pass a test to become a Wing Ding... or maybe you have to be older than 32 to join?
Needless to say, this message occupied my mind for the remainder of my drive home. My final conclusion:
Some things aren't meant to be read for meaning
As for you, Wing Dings... well played... I salute you.
