Summer Book Club

In an attempt to provide my brain a break from research this summer, I have a lovely stack of fun reads and I am so excited! I know it sounds weird that I'm reading to get away from reading, but the brain is like a muscle people, the more you exercise it the better it works. I said this to Mike and he laughed at me, so apparently this is just my hypothesis about the brain but it works for me. Seriously, I find the more I read the faster I read and when I have a stack of professional books and a folder on my computer filled with PDF files about reading instruction... speed is my friend.

So blogger friends, allow me to share with you my take on my reads for this summer. I will provide a list below. Feel free to join me, read along, and comment if you'd like. I loves me a good book and I'm sure you do too!

The first one completed is Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult.

Believe it or not, this was my first Jodi Picoult book... I know! I guess I missed the seminar in which they proclaimed her a fave amongst female readers. In short, this book took place in Paradise, PA in an Amish community. An infant is found dead in a barn and an investigator determines the main suspect, a girl named Katie who claims to not remember a thing... and also denies ever being pregnant. An attorney, Ellie, just getting out of a long term relationship and unhappy with her career track, is brought to the community to represent Katie. She shares a room with Katie in her home and takes on the duties of the Amish, full force.

The book is great, I had a hard time putting it down. Picoult describes Amish culture in a relate able way making you not only feel you are a part of the faith, but also helps you to understand the meaning behind their way of life. There's a scene about half way through where Ellie joins Katie's family at church and Picoult describes it in a way that made me appreciate what they do 100x more than I had before. There's also a whole lotta love going around which interweaves itself in many, many different ways... all captivating in their own ways. I will say one thing... the book was about 400 pages and could've been condensed to at least 300, maybe less but it's an easy read and will pass along the title with my stamp of approval (which means a lot, I know).

  1. I have a kindle - just got it a few months ago - and I ABSOLUTELY love it! It may sound weird, but I feel as though it makes reading more fun. Plus it's nice to have virtually any book your want within seconds and not have to lugg the books (and their hundreds of pages) around with you. Also, I just got a mail last week that said the Kindle price has dropped from $260 to $170 or something like that. Doesn't help me much, but I'll pass that savings onto you. :) Happy reading!
