Teacher Talk Tuesday

Ahh the days following a very long break from school are always interesting. After waking up my 4th student from a nap, during reading time this morning (and no we do not have nap time in first grade), I decided to dedicate my post on this Teacher Talk Tuesday to the importance of sleep and young kids.

An average 6 year old needs at least 10-11 hours of sleep per night. The link between a proper night's sleep and high academic achievement is highly supported. I see the evidence everyday in my classroom and within my school. Student's who get enough sleep not only perform better in the classroom but, I have found, also have an easier time making friends.

This is a pretty accurate depiction of what my sleeping first graders look like... only minus the stairs and pj's... and add one shocked teacher who is trying to teach this child how to read!
Bottom line:
Enough sleep = A happy child
A happy child = A happy teacher =)
