Happy 4th of July!
Have I ever told you my birthday is on the 4th of July? I'm sure it's inadvertently found it's way into a post or two. To tell you the truth I'm surprised I haven't devoted one whole post (or multiple posts) to the fact because generally I like everyone I come in contact with to know that while they celebrate the 4th it happens to also be... my birthday.
The 4th of July which is also my birthday is one of my most favorite days of the year. Until I was about 10 years old we spent every 4th of July in Wakefield, MI where I was born, where both my parents grew up, and also where a good portion of my family still lives. It was a very big deal. I always thought the big deal was for me but now, since returning in my more adulthood state, I've realized the 4th of July in Wakefield is a very big deal to everyone. Nevertheless, these celebrations remain some of my most cherished memories of growing up. I think my parents must have known how special it was to spend year after year in this spot celebrating the way we did which is why we did it. Since that time, now almost 20 years ago (holy sh**, that can't be true) we've been back just not every year.
3 years ago for my 26th birthday Mike finally got to experience the 4th in the UP which I blogged about here. He certainly felt it did not live it up to hype which is in no way a reflection of the actual celebration but rather my excessive hyping I've badgered his poor ears with since we started dating. The picture above is my Grandpa and I on my 26th birthday. His birthday is close to mine so the cake says happy birthday to us both. It's odd that I stumbled upon this picture this year because he actually passed away in May. My memories of my birthdays when I was little also happen to be the happiest memories I have of my grandparents as they hosted the festivities each year.
Even though every birthday is a great one (you really can't go wrong when your birthday is on the 4th of July) nothing ever compares to a birthday spent in the UP and nothing will really ever compare to those birthdays when I was young.
Happy 4th of July everyone! I hope you're spending it with family and friends who mean the most to you!
