Teacher Talk Tuesday
The Olympics!
sorry this is a day late :(
The olympics creates some great opportunities for some at home activities!
Math:
1. Use tallies on a chart to keep track of various Olympic elements (medals awarded to: countries, US, or events)
2. State the time/point difference between each medal winner and have your child figure out the difference (they show this on the tv now so you'd have to figure out a way for them not to see the answer).
3. Calculate and compare the distance of various events.
Reading/Writing/History:
The Olympics is absolutely rich with history. Thanks to the internet, you can have information about events, locations, and famous Olympians within seconds. Choose a favorite athlete and read up. You can then find information about former competitors, or a competitor from another country, and compare.
Science:
1. Do some research on athlete training. Learn about the different muscles used for each event and the importance of total body strength.
2. Challenge your child to figure out the advantage of staying low in speed skating and/or tucking when possible on the ski hill.
The possibilities are really endless! All it takes is a little creativity and the motivation to answer the question...
how do they do that?!
