Teacher Talk Tuesday

Author spotlight...

Cynthia Rylant writes fantastic picture books that truly rope you in as a reader. She's a beautiful writer who has a way of describing situations that make you think, reminisce, cry, and laugh. In short, her books are somewhat like a Pixar flick... they touch their audience members both young and old.

Make bedtime stories a nightly ritual and throw a few of these titles into the mix. As your child gets older, talk with them about the story and the things the characters go through. There is simply no better way to foster a love for reading than to provide a time where you are sharing and modeling a love for reading with your child. It's also important for your child to see your love for reading any book, not just "grown-up" books.

This one is my absolute favorite because it brings back one of the most cherished memories I have from childhood... the year the entire Dean family came to our tiny house to celebrate Thanksgiving. We were literally bursting at the seam with Dean's (ah, it rhymes!) and I loved every minute of is. My aunt gave me a copy of this book as a gift (she's a teacher too) with a note inside referring to this memory... it's probably one of my most prized possessions. and i'm not even joking :)

Happy reading everyone!!
