What I Want to be When I Grow Up
Welcome to Career Day folks!
I took a personal day yesterday to be a guest speaker for Career Day at Mike's school! The day was planned a while back when his guidance counselor (aka Career Day Planner) mentioned there were quite a few kids interested in learning about teaching little kids. Lucky for them, Mike knew just the person to ask!!
Would you like to know a secret? I was nervous. This may sound incredibly arrogant, but I am not used to teaching students who aren't really interested in what I have to say! It just comes with the territory, my kids think I'm the bomb and it just so happens... the feeling is mutual. This was not the case in Mike's classroom. Now, obviously, I knew it wouldn't be exactly the same but I wasn't quite prepared for some of the death stares I received that seemed to shout from the back of the room, "I'm not listening...I'm here because they forced me to choose three people to listen to today...I don't care what you have to say." tough crowd, I tell ya, tough crowd
As I was preparing myself, I had to think back to what it was like to be in 7th grade. I wanted to make sure my schpeel included things they'd actually find interesting and meaningful instead of just teacher talk. At the end, I opened the discussion up for questions and, to my surprise, there were a few brave souls who volunteered (and thank god for that otherwise I would've totally ran out of this to say to these kids) The most frequently asked questions was... "How long does your patience last?" My response... as long as it needs to =).
I did get to share some of my kid funnies to the groups too and I actually made some of the kids laugh!!! That right there was the mark of success, I'm not a total junior-high-guest-speaker-loser! phew
