Fun with Non Fiction

Our non fiction unit is in full swing in first grade! This unit never fails to amaze me... I love curious kids and how they give me evil stares when I have interrupt their self-directed learning... so I wanted to dedicate this post to the wonder of adding non fiction books to your reading collection. I really think the biggest thing standing on our way of filling a young ones shelf with non fiction books is accessibility. I am saddened sometimes when I walk into the kids section of popular bookstores and see nothing but large books overflowing with information organized in a way that will make a six year olds head spin. Never fear, I have a series that is perfect for you!

The Read and Wonder series is absolutely fabulous. The books are actually picture books making them perfect for bedtime reading. The story-lines are engaging, lovable, and all true! Interesting facts are also genius-ly interwoven into the illustrations. 


You simply can't go wrong!


Heads Up: Your child may bombard you with questions galore as you unleash the wonder of these books... as a teacher I find this totally awesome, but understand you may have a differing opinion, I apologize for the inconvenience =).

I wasn't sure I wanted to write a post about Will's arrival partly because I believe this is a very intimate event meant for an exclusive crowd (in our case this would include just Mike and I) and partly because I wasn't sure I'd really want to relive the event. Last week Mike and I received some news that made for a very good start to our weekend. It's no secret that our school districts, Mike's mostly, have been forced to make drastic cuts in their staffing for next year. So far Mike's job has been secure but we take it week by week. A week with no news is one week closer to being okay. As for me, I was 99.9% sure I was okay which helps of course. Well, on Tuesday the state passed the budget which sent some money back to the school districts.. and by some I mean Mike's school district went from a 33 million dollar budget cut to 11 million! Although we're not completely in the clear (we'll know for sure after April 30th) this is obviously great news.  We went out on Friday night to celebrate this news and one of Mike's co-workers birthdays. Welcome to Iowa!

Come one, come all… to a place called Iowa (it’s in the middle, not to be confused with Idaho ). Welcome blog-trotters , I’m happy you are here! My Iowa journey began 8 years ago at Iowa State University and I’m now going on year 4 of my true residency as an Iowan. My husband and I live in the center of the downtown area of Des Moines. We make a living by teaching the youth of America (or future Iowans themselves). We both come from neighboring states (I’m from Minnesota and he’s from Illinois ) but we are thoroughly enjoying our lives here in the capital city.
