Throwing Stones

I know I say a lot about my family and how lucky I am to have them, which is true... most of the time.

When I think back to my childhood there are certain memories I'd rather forget entirely... like Sundays. Not all Sundays, but Sundays from the fall and winter months. I can't tell you how many times I sat alone in my room, either completing homework, reading a book, or just plain escaping from the craziness ensuing in my family room. Unfortunately, there was no escaping it. The screaming, the jumping, the clapping, the hollering... it was terrible.

You see, dear readers... I grew up in a household of... wait for it... Packer fans.

As if this weren't bad enough, I lived with Packer fans in a blizzard of Viking fans... can it get any worse?

This had such an impact on me that when I moved away to college people would ask... "so, you're from Minnesota, does that make you a Vikings fan?" To which I would immediately unleash the fury that can only come from suppressed memories of misery from childhood. No one was ever prepared, it's amazing I made the friends. In an attempt to calm myself, I devised a plan. Surely my future was decided, I would remain completely impartial to any professional football team. I guess I thought, by taking such a stance, I'd save countless other children from retreating to their rooms while their parents were taken over by the curse that is the NFL, but really it was merely an attempt to rebel against the cheese-heads I was forced to live with every Sunday.

Little did I know... I'd meet a Bears fan, and with this came the realization of the flaw in my plan... I must become a Bears fan too. Its a plan that is three-fold really:
1. I think the only real NFL rivalry I truly can't stand is between the Vikings and the Packers because no matter where you turn in MN, it seems you run into one or the other.
2. It's cool to be a fan of a team from Illinois because their pride beats out actual talent. The major teams in Illinois (or at least the teams with the most nation-wide following) have had some of the worst season, and stretches for that matter, in professional sports history and no one cares.
3. I'll still fit in with my current state of residence because everyone in Iowa is confused about who they root for anyways.

So, it's been decided. I am now a Bears fan, and to all you Pack-attacks out there... prepare to be dominated.
