Teacher Talk Tuesday

The subject of this post is not intended to make anyone lose faith in the teaching profession. If you feel yourself becoming a bit disappointed, I'm sorry. Just try to remember the massive amount of children one elementary school teacher actually encounters in their time as a teacher. please don't hate me

Here it is...
Teachers lie.

When I taught first grade, my students thought I had a large wall in my home completely devoted to their crap art. Whenever I received a lovely piece of art from one of my sweeties I would dramatically state how touched I was by their thoughtfulness and then say, "how on earth did you know I had a hole in my wall of art just waiting for this piece!" They ate.it.up. Oh, and for those who may be wondering, yes my "wall" does have shelves... because sometimes kid crap art is lumpy 3 dimensional.

Tonight, my students are performing in the All District Band Extravaganza and they think I'm there. They asked today, "Mrs.Pentek, are you coming to our band concert tonight?!!!!!!!" To which I said, "of course! I wouldn't miss it!" As you can read, I'm at home, writing this post.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love my students and I do enjoy celebrating their work, but my time outside of school is precious so I'm very choosy about attending events. As for the art... I have a few truly special pieces tucked away to pull out when I'm having a bad day. Just trust me... if you received as many pieces of art as teachers do, you'd edit too. Again, please don't hate me.

  1. HA! This is fantastic! Honestly-what does this post remind you of? Approximately 6 years ago looking at cards adorned with childrens' art at target-Ashley "I'm sorry but this is ugly, I know a kid drew it, but that doesn't make me want it on my christmas cards". Response-Sarah "Oh ash, all kids' art is beautiful" or something to that effect :)

  2. Oh man Ash, I totally thought of the exact same thing as I wrote it!!! I'm ashamed... apparently I have met my quota for seeing and loving kid art, hahahaha!

  3. Just wait until someday your own kids find their "art" carefully disposed of in the garbage can. The guilt is worse. ;-)
