Teacher Talk Tuesday

A moment of geekness

Last night I was reading a little research, weird I know, and I came across this bit of information I just had to share with you all.

"Adolescents entering the adult world in the 21st century will read and write more than at any other time in human history. The will need advanced levels of literacy to perform their jobs, run their households, act as citizens, and conduct their personal lives. The will need literacy to cope with the flood of information they will find everywhere they turn. They will need literacy to feed their imaginations so they can create the world of the future. In a complex and sometimes even dangerous world, their ability to read will be crucial. Continual instruction beyond the early grades is needed." expert found here

As critical readers, we'll all have our own reactions to this info. but we'll ultimately end with similar questions in mind... why should we care? Although print is changing daily as we move to a more technologically advanced society, the act of reading is still as important as it has always been. Thinking proactively, how can we embrace the changes going on around us to ensure our kids are set for the future? What might happen if we don't? I feel like Winnie the Pooh thinking on his tree stump

It's a big task... but I think we're up to the challenge.
