It's More Like a Window

Here are a few things I've learned in the past 7 days...

1. Babies don't always come on time.

2. You're not considered "overdue" until you're two weeks past your due date.

3. Due dates are called Estimated Dates of Arrival once it's determined the baby will not arrive on the due date. I'm convinced if you actually have your baby on your due date it's still called the due date and everyone involved in baby's arrival pats themselves on the back for being masters of the universe... the universe of being correct and "on time".

4. Apparently I am a planner and "planner" is a kind and acceptable way to call someone a control freak.

5. As much as it pains me to admit, the secret thoughts in my head over the last week prove #4 to be true. (These would be the thoughts I'd rather not share with anyone such as, "If I put my mind to something, it always works out. So if I do a, b, and c the baby will come out. But it still hasn't.)

6. The most important factor is always, always the safety and health of this little baby and myself. Both are still doing as well as can be. This is both wonderful and challenging at the same time because it means no one is in a hurry to get this baby out.

7. The placenta begins to age after 40 weeks gestation. The thought of something aging inside me grosses me out.

8. Everyone who so sweetly shrieked with joy when you announce you're pregnant will also be the same people who text and message you frantically the minute your due date arrives wondering where the heck the baby is and whether or not it plans to arrive anytime soon. Every. Single. One of them.

9. Back to fact #2... "a due date is really more like a window for moms to be. It means the baby could really come two weeks before or after the date." This is a public service announcement all nurses and OB's must memorize and practice before entering their line of work. They are taught to provide this public service announcement at every OB appointment after one's due date and they don't care how you feel personally about this tidbit of insight they conveniently wait to share with you until the very end. Clever baby people. Real clever.

Baby P was due on June 6th. Currently, there are no signs he/she plans to arrive anytime soon. Although we are more than thankful baby is doing very well, I can't say these last 5 days have been the most fun days of my life. Stay tuned...
