Slow and Steady Wins the Race

You know how, when faced with a physical challenge, everyone reverts straight to the chant, "I think I can, I think I can..." from the sweet little engine who, in fact, could? Well, I've learned that kitchen remodeling brings about a different type of source of reassurance; the lesson from The Tortoise and the Hare. Alternative lesson: Nothing about kitchen remodeling is speedy =).

That being said, we have made awesome progress. Case in point:

Before:

And after:

To recap, we removed the soffit giving us about a whole foot more to work with below the ceiling. We were able to go with 36" upper cabinets which are quite tall but allow a whole bunch of storage. We also changed the wall color from gross glossy green to a warm yellow (the pictures make it a bit brighter than it actually is). We also got rid of the angled lower cabinet in the corner and went with a 90 degree easy reach. It sounds like it wouldn't make a huge different but with the clunkiness of the old cabinets, this change has actually made it feel a lot more spacious. Plus we'll have more usable counter space. The best part, I think, is the pantry we added by the fridge. This has 4 roll out drawers in the lower part plus two or three huge/deep shelves in the upper part.

We only have two functional phases left:
- Installation of the counter tops (this is processing as I type)
- Installation of the dishwasher/sink/disposal (all purchased just waiting for the counter top installation)

I say "functional phases" because those are the items we still need in order to have a fully functioning kitchen. There will still be small work jobs here and there but once those are finished, we'll have a true kitchen.

Regardless, we are just thrilled. It looks better than we'd hope and it's so cool to see everything "come together". I can't wait to show you the final, final product!
