Winter Break TwentyTwelve
I figured before the spring thaw rolled around, I may want to recap winter break. You know... to document and such. What on earth has gotten into me? I have become such a slacker lately. The good news: it's a new year and after an extended break from work (2 snow days, duh), I feel very refreshed. Let the recap begin...
Remember TravelFest 2012? Well, I'd like to affectionately label winter break 2012 and continuation of such TravelFest. Why? We traveled to 3 states in the span of one week. All neighbored one another so no where too drastic but when all was said and done, we felt as though we'd endured quite an adventure.
Our first stop was Minnesota where we spent Christmas and a the days following. It was wonderful. Plenty of relaxation, excellent food, and nonstop family quality time.
A few days after we arrived in Minnesota, my aunt, uncle, and cousin flew into town and joined us. They came for a family wedding, which I'll get to in a minute, but were able to come a bit early to spend a few days with us (ps, they're the same aunt and uncle from this crazy trip so needless to say, we couldn't wait to see them all!). While we were all together, we checked out the new Excelsior Brewing Company which was super cool. It was my first time and although it's a relatively new business was booming! I'm excited to visit again and hope they have plans to expand. The beer was good too.
Our next destination was Holiday Acres Resort in Rhinelander, WI, a lovely town in northern Wisconsin where more of my side of the family lives. My cousin Timmy got married on December 29th so the whole family was in town. It was snowing when we arrived and despite not seeing anything on the radar and hearing numerous times on the radio it was nothing more than a "light dusting" they ended up with about 3" of fresh snow when all was said and done. It really was beautiful.
You definitely know you're in northern Wisconsin when you think it's a lot of snow and they barely bat an eye (perhaps I've lived in Iowa for too long?) Another crazy thing about Wisconsin... the size of their wine glasses.
Comparable to the size of a small child's head, I'd say. What do you think?
The wedding was fun and it was really great to see family I rarely get to see.
Our final stop was Galena, IL for a New Year's Eve wedding. Yes, another wedding... two in three days actually... can anyone beat that? This was my first time ever in Galena and it definitely lived up to it's description. We stayed at an Irish hotel and ate dinner our first night there in their Irish pub with live Irish music which was pretty neat. We walked around town the next day until heading to the wedding. I had mixed feelings about attending a wedding on New Year's Eve but we ended up having a blast. It was even better than being at a bar because the drinks were free, it wasn't crowded, and we were surrounded by close friends. What could be better?
The reception was held at an old theatre and at midnight they drew the curtains and the bride and groom ran on stage and shot confetti out onto the dance floor. Not gonna lie, it was pretty perfect and what a cool anniversary for them, huh?
Winter Break Twenty Twelve was a great success although we were tired on our first day back to work (we went back on Wednesday). I am super impressed that we managed to completely unpack, clean the car, and grocery shop on the day we returned (in the past this has usually taken a few days... or sometimes weeks). Hmmm... we must be growing up :). Happy new year everyone!
