Let's Get Real: What was I thinking?

Did you know Einstein defines insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? I personally believe that last night I began to prove him right.
Allow me to set the scene:
Last week I saw this and decided to jump on the band wagon. So, last Saturday I headed to Hobby Lobby with the mission of finding the exact supplies needed to participate in the challenge found above. I should've known things weren't going to end well when I couldn't find any of the supplies I needed so I decided to create a spin-off of my original idea. "You can totally do this, it'll be fine. Just find supplies that'll work and it'll still look great." The events leading to this crazy thought process was my first mistake.
Fast forward to Monday night: Mike leaves to play poker with some friends and I get down to business. My project included some alphabet stencils, a blank white canvas, and some paint. That's all you really need to know because this craft didn't last too long.

After the first letter it hit me... I'm so not crafty.
The worst part of this realization is that I know this about myself, I've made this mistake before and yet, here I was, sprawled out in my living room completely convinced I could channel my nonexistent inner Martha Stewart. Big mistake. Huge...

Here's the evidence:

I'm not even going to post the link to the Pinterest inspiration for this project because it would only lead to further embarrassment.

I'd say the most critical component of craftiness I lack is patience.
The directions say to weigh the stencil down so it doesn't move; I use my finger tips which leads to shakiness and bleeding.
The directions say to use light dabs with the brush until the stencil is filled in; I decide little dabs will take too long and I try to fill the entire letter in, in one smooth stroke.
The experts say to wait until the previous letter dries completely before moving to the next; I finished the word Let in approximately 38.5 seconds.

So why am I reliving this crapcraft-tastic event, you may be asking? I want to be quite certain this is the final attempt I ever try to make at completing a craft. It's just not my gift and I really don't want to fit the description of insanity mentioned above. Large sigh

Afterwards I made myself feel better by admiring the doors I completed not too long ago. Then I curled up on the couch with my current read because reading is something I happen to do quite well every single time I make an attempt. Redemption

Later that evening... I decided to show Mike my "craft" when he got home and he didn't even crack a smile. He told me I was being too hard on myself, gave me a kiss on the cheek and said, "I think it's really sweet you tried to make something to go on the walls of our home." I sure am a lucky gal.

  1. "I think it's really sweet you tried to make something to go on the walls of our home."
With that quote from Mike, I'm now curious for the link. Have to admit this is pretty funny. I think you should just keep trying and actually listen to the instructions. You're a teacher isn't that embedded in your brain?
One star for the attempt. :D

  3. I think teachers want you to think they're really good with directions but the real truth is: They're great at giving directions, not so great at taking directions. We tend to be control freaks by nature... it's ironic, yes?!

Thanks for the advice and vote of confidence Linds!

Liisa- I doubt you'll find the link as my version looks absolutely nothing like it should. The funny thing is, the actual orginal would've been much easier because it wouldn't have involved paint or stencils at all (a clue for you, hehe).

  4. I think I now know what you were trying and crafty gal that I am I have a plan B for you. Go to the scrapbook section of your craft store and buy large stickers that you can spell out your words with. Stick them to the canvas. Brush over the entire thing, then WHEN IT IS DRY, peel off the letters...
