Jackson

Our not-so-little-anymore puppy had quite an exciting start to the new year. I came home from work one Friday and noticed Jackson had gotten sick in his crate. I was a little alarmed but didn't think too much of it since he does throw up every once in a while and moves right along with his day. I cleaned it up and we played for a while. Around dinner time though he got sick 3 more times which really alarmed us because he had never done that before. The poor guy, his whole body would just convulse and then afterwards he'd just lean onto our legs and not move. We called the emergency vet (by this time it was after hours) and they told us to bring him in. About an hour later we're staring at x-rays of our little guys intestines and deciding whether or not he needed surgery or to just keep him in the hospital over night for observation. I didn't want to do either (because I wanted him home with us especially if he wasn't feeling well) but Mike and I both agreed if he needed something, we couldn't do anything for him so we left him there for the night. Of course we got a call around 3am telling us he had an obstruction and would need surgery as soon as we gave the okay. It was quite a night!

He did fine in surgery but had to stay in the hospital all day for observation which was torture for us! I was so worried about him and just wanted to get him home so we could see him and be there for him to do whatever he needed. We finally picked him up after dinner the next day. He had a cone on his head and wasn't eating as much as the doctor would've like. The first 24 hours were rough for all of us. We had to hand feed him (too much food would make him sick), needed pain medication every 4 hours, he wouldn't drink anything, he was super tired, and he wasn't going to the bathroom very regularly. It was kind of scary but after the first day he started acting more like himself. Luckily we actually ended up having a snow day the Monday after this ordeal so we got to spend one extra day with him at home before leaving him all day.

He was so funny with his cone. I found him like this one morning after taking a shower. It seems he had a little mishap with his blankie :).

Other than that, Jackson is doing quite well. Here's a few more updates about our little guy:

- He's tolerated the cold weather and lack of exercise pretty well this winter but we're all excited for the weather to warm up so we can get back to regular walks each day.

- He weighed 63 lbs. when he had his surgery. He'll continue to fill out as he matures but we don't think he'll get too much taller than he is now.

- He loves to watch people cook. It's probably because he's a lab and he really loves food but he loves to watch you cook in the kitchen. He doesn't jump up on the counters which is nice, he just likes to be around all the food!

- He'll do anything for a treat which is good because we still have some training to do with him; mainly how to greet people calmly. He's also still really mouthy (he doesn't bite but he puts his mouth on everything all the time) so we have to figure out how to manage that.

- He spent time with Mike's cousin's two kids over Christmas and we were really impressed with how well he did with them. Jackson loved them of course but he wasn't too mouthy with them and anytime they turned their back to him he left them alone. This made me feel a lot better about bringing a baby into his world.

We sure do love him. He's been a pretty great addition to our home and family. :)
