A Fake Out

Let's rewind to about a week and half before my last post shall we? This would be the time Mike and I discovered things were about to get very, very interesting. First, this was not a complete surprise. We had decided, after many months of pondering and discussing, that we were ready for "the next step". This is not a decision either of us took lightly. Mike and I are obnoxiously cautious enough that nothing short of 100% certainty and readiness to commit was going to cut it. All this aside, it's still one hell of a surprise any way you slice it. I think we're still in shock on some level to be honest. So, here's how we found out...

We were out to eat and I had symptoms that told me we were certainly not pregnant that month. I was within days of my expected "flow" (TMI I'm sure, but I actually feel this piece is really important for anyone trying to conceive, *see my final note at the bottom) and had cramps letting me know it was imminent. So... I ordered a beer. Actually two. I even said to Mike, "it didn't happen this month, sorry." In truth, we were both bummed.

Fast forward 5 days. I'm at home and Mike is working on grad. school work at Caribou Coffee. I had a bottle of wine calling my name on our wine rack so I decided it would be a great time to put on an episode of Mad Men and twist that bad boy open. Annoyingly, flow had not arrived yet so I decided to take a test just to be safe all while muttering under my breath, "this is so stupid, I know I'm not, I'm just wasting a stick only to tell me what I already know." Within two minutes, two lines appeared on the stick. It sounds so cliche but all I could do was go back and forth between the stick and the box thinking, "you've got to be kidding me." Mike called and asked if I wanted to go get some ice cream. I told him sure but to come inside quick before we left. Apparently this gave away my secret (which I only had for about 15 minutes) and he knew what was up. I showed him the stick and then I wasn't alone in my staring and disbelief. It wasn't anything planned, spectacular, or elaborate. It was just us, a stick, and our elated disbelief.

For the record, the bottle of wine continues to call my name from the wine rack. The nerve ;)

*Also*, for the record, cramps are a very common symptom of early pregnancy. I had never heard of this until after the fact but let it be known to any and all lady friends, it feels exactly like what it feels like when flow is on its way. More people need to discuss this because I was paranoid there was something wrong. That however, is a whole other topic worthy of a post all its own.
