Catching Up
Allow me to bring you up to speed. Despite this deceptively being the longest month of the year we've managed to squeeze in some fun this February.
President's Day weekend was a 3 day weekend for us here in Des Moines and Mike had class so I decided at the last minute to make a trip up to visit my family in Minnesota. Friday night we enjoyed some tasty burgers at Lions Tap in Eden Prairie and on Saturday my dad and I set out on a few fun adventures. First, we picked up our new dining room table (more on that in a bit), next we enjoyed sushi for lunch and made the obligatory trip to IKEA (must go everytime I'm in the vacinity, it may be a sickness), and we ended our adventure at none other that Excelsior Brewing Company (my new favorite micro-brewery).
Forgive the slightly unfocused picture but I couldn't help myself. Only in Minnesota would you find a man in a one piece carhart snow suit carrying a growler in his snow mobile helmet. (actually scratch that, you'd totally find this in Wisconsin and Michigan too but to me, they're all the same).
Apparently my dad and I are a friendly pair because by the time we left we had made 4 new friends (sadly, the growler-in-helmet guy was not one of them).
As for our new dining room table, it's true... we've finally completed our dining room (well, furniture wise). We decided to make the purchase as a Christmas gift to one another. Plus, we still had $200 in gift cards from our wedding to put towards the purchase. Score!
It's this table and bench from Crate and Barrel. The chairs are from Target. Our first reaction after seeing everything put together in the room was that every piece of furniture in the room is super dark. Not necessarily a bad thing, just something we had to get used to. We're used to it now and we really like it. It's the perfect size and finally makes us feel like our main living area is complete.
Last weekend was especially fun as well. We welcomed Mike's sister and her husband for the weekend. They came in town to visit and also see an Iowa State basketball game. It was my first basketball game since college and I completely forgot how fun Hilton can be! Not to mention the crazy amount of Cyclone fans in one place, never gets old. Iowa State played Texas Tech and we won the game.
This one's for you mom. It's far away but this is a picture taken just for you of Coach Hoiberg. You're welcome and, may I add, he really is quite a handsome man.
Afterwards we headed home and enjoyed a great dinner at Dos Rios to round out the weekend. It was great to see them and we loved that they came out for a visit. Can't wait to see them again, hopefully soon!
Did anyone else thoroughly enjoy the Oscar's on Sunday evening? Please tell me you devoted 6 hours of your life to this event like I did (red carpet special + Awards show = 6 hours, duh). Though I didn't particularly enjoy the host let's be honest, I totally geek out over this stuff. I was so rooting for Jessica Chastain especially when she appeared on the red carpet looking like this...

Total movie star, right?! But I was very happy for Jennifer Lawrence too. I was also so happy for Christoph Waltz! Mike and I are kicking ourselves for not seeing Argo when it was in theaters but it's definitely on our list now. All in all, it was a great night and if you haven't seen Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, or Django Unchained, I highly recommend them all.
Lastly, we have had some cah-razy snow up in here lately. To recap, we had a snow day in January when we recieved about 5 inches of snow. This morning marked the end of approximately 36 hours of straight snow resulting in 9 inches across the metro and we did not have a snow day. This is nuts. Supposedly there's another round coming next week but I'm totally deflated about the whole thing. What's the point in getting snow if you can't enjoy a snow day? Hmmm, perhaps living in Iowa has made me a bit of a snow day snob. could be worse
And now, I must say I am so thankful we are on the eve of the last day of this month. Our weekends have been great but the weekdays are just draggin'. The only good thing to come from the dreaded month of February is the approach of none other than... spring.break. Yeah, baby.
