Gone Girl

Way back at the end of the school year, and the beginning of our travel-filled summer, I decided I'd begin re-reading the Harry Potter series. I knew I'd have plenty of time (because each trip this past summer was a road trip) and figured it'd make packing real easy. I plowed through the first 3 and was half way through the 4th when I received an e-mail from my book club informing me the September book of choice was Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. No problem, I thought, I didn't read the August one and it was totally fine. Well then, I noticed posts from my book club friends on Facebook stating how good this one was. How they couldn't put it down. How they missed the characters after they finished because it was so enthralling. And how they couldn't wait to discuss.

So I caved.

Yes. I paused Harry Potter to read this so called "fantastic" book and you know what, it wasn't it fantastic. It was mind blowing. In the best way. Like holygoodlordhavemercy did that just happen good.

This book is told through the perspectives of Amy and Nick Dunne, a couple celebrating their 5th anniversary. On this day, Amy goes missing without a trace. As the book takes you through the days following Amy's disappearance, you're also filled in on their past which is anything but blissful. The chapters flip back and forth between past and present until you eventually learn Nick is the prime suspect in Amy's mysterious disappearance. It's here where Nick makes a mind blowing discovery leaving you white knuckled as you're continually dragged through the sick and twisted world of Nick and Amy Dunne.

I'd say it took about 37 1/2 pages before I was completely hooked and couldn't put it down. Flynn's style of writing leaves you in such a state of confusion that you have no choice but to keep reading just to find out what the h*ll is going on. This was probably my favorite aspect of this novel, it's unpredictable and just when you think you have it all figured out you mutter to yourself, "there's no way these characters are that messed up." But they are.

It's all kinds of wrong, and I liked it. Maybe you will too? It's definitely worth a try.
Now back to my regularly scheduled reading.
