First Things First
Clean and Paint
After closing on our house Thursday we headed straight over and got to work. The first items on the agenda were to clean the house top to bottom and to paint. Although we didn't actually plan it this way, we closed 6 weeks before we have to be out of our apartment downtown allowing us to do things like paint and clean with a completely empty home. Needless to say, we had a productive weekend.
Mike and his dad started painting with the ceiling. When I first heard this was the plan I was like, "what a waste of time!" But I'll tell you something, I actually do see a difference and the good news with the ceilings is we only have to do it once. One other seemingly insignificant item we painted was the closets which was totally worth it. If you are moving and have the opportunity to paint/clean without furniture I'd highly recommend this. When else will you have the opportunity?
Entry way and main living area: Before
The previous owners used a taupe color in the entry way and main living areas. We actually did like the color they chose but I felt it was a bit too gold for my taste so we decided to lighten things up and go with a more modern gray-beige. Once we started painting we realized it was a good thing we did because the previous owner's clearly only painted to put the house on the market leaving many spots where the paint hadn't even covered (it's amazing the things you notice once the house is empty and you spend about 8 straight hours looking at the same walls... good news though, we still love the house!).
After paint:

We weren't positive we liked it at first because it turned out a lot lighter than we expected (we are novices with paint because we're so tentative with color!). After two coats though we agreed, it looked great.
Bedrooms Before:
After paint:
We chose a pale silver/green for the two bedrooms (one will be a guest room and the other will be set up as an office of sorts). In the master bedroom we decided to go with a slate blue which turned out well too even though we really thought it would closer to gray blue than it is. My dad has a lot of experience with paint and has always said any tone of blue always turns out "bluer" than you think. I'm happy to report... papa still knows best =). Mike laughed when we finished the bedrooms because he said it looks like the same color! I promise, there is a subtle difference. Overall we are thrilled.
As for cleaning, most of it was pretty standard. We've decided to completely remodel the kitchen so no cleaning is required there now. I'd say the absolute hardest item to clean was the hallway bathtub! It clearly hadn't been tended to in quite some time. As soon as I began I realized... this tub was going to be the death of me. After 4 coats of Kaboom foam (the kind that goes on blue and turns to white when its clean which is pretty fun to clean with) I finally concluded I needed a secret ingredient... Mr. Clean Magic Eraser! These scrub pads are amazing and allowed me the greatest feeling of satisfaction when the mildew drips finally disappeared before my very eyes.
Feel free to visit and take a bubble bath if you'd like... the tub is squeaky clean I promise!
