DSM is on Fire

Perhaps this is a little known fact about me but I am a bit of a home body. Don't get me wrong, I love being social and hanging out with friends but I love being home equally as much especially on weeknights. Truthfully, it takes something very special to get me out of the house on a weeknight. With that, you can just imagine how special an event must be to actually get me out of the house two weeknights in a row. Allow me to explain.

Last October Des Moines Public Schools began it's search for a new Superintendent. Last week they announced the top three finalist and conducted public interviews this past week. One of the finalists was Mr. Tom Ahart who was the principal who hired Mike back in 2010 when he was bumped from his position. This brought Mike to Harding Middle School, where he's been ever since. In this time Mike worked under Mr. Ahart for a year until he was promoted to the Associate Superintendent of Teaching and Learning for DMPS. At this time, he also hired me to join the DMPS curriculum team which led me to my current position at King Elementary. Needless to say, we owe a lot to this man and are and will be forever grateful for what he's done for us. So when we found out his public interview would be held on Tuesday March 5th at 7pm, we planned to be there without hesitation. You can watch part of his interview here but, in short, Mr. Ahart's positive influence is palpable. We've known this for a few years but now it appears others have caught on too because on Friday the school board announced Mr. Ahart will be our next Superintendent.

Mr. Ahart is an amazing leader and will have an immeasurable impact on Des Moines Public Schools. We are so excited for the future and support his decisions and leadership 100%.

In other news, on Wednesday we headed to the Wells Fargo Arena to cheer on the Roosevelt Rough Riders as they participated in the boys state basketball tournament. They actually beat Valley High School who, for those unfamiliar with the area, is sort of known as the Des Moines metro powerhouse when it comes to sports (and boy do they have the cockiness that typically surrounds such status which makes transplants to Iowa like Mike and I chuckle a bit, oooohhhh high school sports). Therefore, beating them and making it to state was a big deal for the Rough Riders. Since Mike is a soccer coach for Roosevelt, we felt it was important to support the boys by cheering them on at their game.

They played Dubuque Senior high school who ended up winning the game. Even though the boys lost it was still fun to show our support. A few of their starters were sophomores so we're hopeful they'll make it to state in the future.

So there you have it. It was a big week for Des Moines Public Schools and we couldn't be prouder of our community. It's currently 40 degrees and raining and Mike has class this weekend which means enjoying the comfort of home is about all that's on my agenda for this weekend. I'm quite happy about it.
