Snow Day and Service Workers
Today marked a special, and quite welcomed day... it was our first snow day in our house. And it was a doosie of a storm too! After the incredibly weak winter we had last year I really think most people were pretty excited to see a real snow storm grace central Iowa this year. We even found out last night that school was cancelled today which is always appreciated because that means we can go to bed without setting an alarm (ahh the bliss of going to sleep without setting an alarm, am I right or am I right?). We did, however, hit one snag. While we were able to wake up on our own and it felt positively wonderful we also realized things were quite quiet and we were quite cold. Our power was out. Immediately your mind starts to race just a bit as you go through all the things that may go wrong due to lack of power. Luckily, we didn't really have to worry about food spoiling because the temperature in our house was only slightly above the temperature in the fridge (okay, that's a little dramatic but worse case scenario, we would've stuck the food on our deck and it would've been fine). Once those worries are out of the way, then your mind wanders to your creature comforts like showering... making a cup of coffee... making anything at all... watching day time tv... having a Harry Potter marathon (which you know we just love to do), we couldn't do any of it. Total bummer.
So we came up with a plan to eat breakfast and go to the gym. We called and made sure they had power and decided we could stay there for a while, take advantage of the warm water and electricity for showering and cleaning up, we could grab lunch on our way home, and maybe/hopefully return to a home with power restored. Great. We had a plan, it was shaping up to be a promising day after all.
By the time we got to the gym they had lost power too. Strike one.
We decided to try another gym but had to stop for gas first. With a full tank, we go to turn the car back on and nothing happens. Strike two.
We called a for help and by some miracle actually got in touch with someone who came out to help us (we were able to stay at the gas station so it wasn't that bad, not like we were on the side of the road or anything). He jumped our battery for us and told us to go straight to a garage/our dealer to get a new battery asap. Done
Approximately 1 hour later we were set to go with a full tank of gas and a new battery in our car. We stopped for some lunch and by the time we got home our power was back on. Total redemption and the rest of the day was warm, caffeinated bliss.
Truth be told it could have been a lot worse but in retrospect we really should've listened to the new anchors and stayed home. I am, however, very thankful to service workers and those who braved the weather to go to work today to help everyone including us. I feel as though they are definitely underappreciated unless you actually require their services and realize how hard their job is on days like this.
Happy snow day everyone! One more day until winter break and then it's home for the holidays!
