Weekend Upd

Oh, whoops... do you feel a little cut off? Like you were super excited to see that I not only updated the blog but that I was about to share the super cool weekend we had because, let's face, we're super cool people. But then, everything just stopped and, perhaps, you feel like you're left a bit in the dark.

This readers, is exactly how our weekend went.

Friday night we hosted some wonderful friends we've met since living here in Des Moines. She's my "workout buddy" at the gym (we share a personal trainer once a week) and we've known each other now for just over three years. She's wonderful, her husband is great, and they just welcomed an adorable little lady last Thanksgiving. They all came over, we enjoyed deep dish pizza (except for the peanut, she had milk) and had a grand 'ole Friday night.

Saturday started by catching up with friends I've known forever. A family I used to babysit for from Minnesota to be exact. When I met them, the youngest was 8 months old and on Saturday morning I got to watch her in all her teenage glory as she tore up the soccer field. She's adorable, always has been and always will be.

Saturday night was a divide and conquer night for Mike and I both; me with some girls, and he with some boys. While we were out, a huge storm came through central Iowa. I didn't think much of it, we were out, with friends, things were good.

We finally made it home to learn, our power was out. So, we called MidAmerican where we waited on hold for about 40 minutes only to find out they hadn't yet been informed of an outage in our neighborhood. Glad we told them but we weren't feeling too hopeful. We went to bed only to wake up to find that not only was our power still out but our neighborhood suffered some damage from the high winds during the storm. Thankfully it was manageable but as we ventured out we saw further damage not only to the trees in our neighborhood but also to the power lines. I called MidAmerican again for an update and was told their goal was to restore power by mid-morning Monday. Oh boy.

Needless to say our Sunday was a quiet one. I think we drifted between naps and reading for a good 6 hours until we finally decided to drive around for a while. When nighttime rolled around and we still did not have any power we began to face the music. The real challenge was thinking of a place to shower before work the next morning if the power still wasn't restored. We decided the gym would be the best way to go and had our bags packed. About 10 minutes after Mike left this morning, the power came back. I heard a click and then saw light... actual light. It was amazing and I cheered loudly to myself and the wonderment that is power and lights and clocks and appliances that work again. It was glorious.

32 hours total we were in the dark and last night was a rough night of sleep because they were working on the lines right outside our house through the night. While their hard work was necessary and much appreciated, the hour or so of actual sleep I got made for a rough Monday. After a long trip to the grocery story to restock the fridge/freezer (we had coolers to save some stuff but not all of it) I can officially say it was an interesting weekend and I'm glad it's over.

I'm also glad we received some amazing camping lights for our wedding. These suckers came in quite handy...

What made using them even more amazing? When the bugs from outside were drawn to the light and began smacking up against the open window just behind the lantern. I felt oddly powerful (and super thankful there was a screen).

Other parts of Iowa were devastated by this same storm. You can read about it here and please keep the people of Creston, and any others effected by the storm, in your thoughts and prayers.
